DIY VIDEO UPSCALING

Video resolution too small, think twice before you post online

STEP BY STEP

  1. Import your video into video editor
  2. Set the sharpness effect to 1.4 when exporting to HD
  3. Crop out any noisy edges e.g. VHS lines, film edges

VIDEO CHOPPY?

This can be common when importing videos from your phone to a computer (from 30fps to 24fps).

You video may end up more choppy due to frames dropping

STEP BY STEP

  1. Import your phone videos to your computer
  2. Import that video into video editor
  3. Select the frame blending option or frame interpolation option
    • Frame blending is mixing two frames into one when converting videos to 24fps
    • Frame interpolation is a method of calculating the frame position of the subject and merges into the desired position into that frame
    • If your video editor does not have any of these two options, either forget it, or search for software that can do these tasks

TRUE SLOW-MO ACTION

Some videos nowadays use real slowmo action.

RULES OF SLOW MOTION

  • Frame rate (FPS) must be at least 50fps (PAL) or 60fps (NTSC)
  • Final videos should be 25fps (PAL) or 30fps (NTSC) which the video is reduced at half the video speed to the correct frame rate. This means slowing videos from 50fps to 25fps
  • Most cheap full HD cameras only use 25/30fps, bad for slow-mo, so unless you use frame interpolation, be careful when using full HD,
NOTE: if your camera does 100/1200fps, the more slower and smoother the video will be, depends on the resolution and video size

STEP BY STEP

  1. Set up video camera to setting with 50/60fps
  2. Record action
  3. Place recording into the computer, start the video editing software
  4. Place video in the timeline on the software, slow down the video to 0.5x
  5. Play the timeline to check then publish video

NOTE: in Australia, we use PAL (25/50fps) so it is recommended to use 50fps into a 25fps for better video picture and performance
